 Children's Action for Development

http://www.cadcambodia.org

Since IDEAS' first visit to the Children's Action Development (CAD) in August 2010, their facilities have expanded from 2 locations to 3. The number of children we now support have grown from 170 to 321. All of these children come from extremely poor families with either impoverish farming parents, single parent, HIV infected or child abuse environment.

IDEAS now supports CAD with infrastructure improvements, teaching materials, stationery supplies and any adhoc projects that may benefit the children one way or another. The recent commitment to feed the children one square meal a day was a huge step forward for us. This means the children will no longer sleep in class or has no energy to concentrate in school because of hunger. Though the simple meal comprises of only steam white rice, a vegetable soup, a meat / vegetable dish and a piece of fruit, the children appreciates it and has shown massive improvement in their school work, interest in other periodical activities organised for them and are generally in better health.

Darlin is a 14-year-old sixth grader who walks 5 km to school every day, rain or shine. On top of walking in the heat and along wet muddy tracks (what we may perceive as a chore), she ensures her younger siblings get to school and the library IDEAS support, everyday. In support of her hard work, maintaining a top ten position in class, we have during this visit provided Darlin and her siblings with two sets of school uniform each and a bicycle.

In order to help her parents support the family of eight children, some set-up capital has been offered to them to start a small scale farming business. The project requires the family to contribute a small portion of their earnings into a community cash pot to help other needy families to make a living. One other HIV infected family without a father, is also benefitting from this new initiative.

A day-trip to the world renowned Angkor Wat was organised for the older children as part of their national education exposure programme. The children would not otherwise have visited Siem Reap due to the cost and distance away from their village. The children and teachers are seen here in their 'Cambodia Smiling Child' t-shirts.

A total of 170 children and teachers made it for the trip with all transport, meals, t-shirts and new school bags sponsored by IDEAS.

Apostolic Prefecture of Battambang

The Apostolic Prefecture of Battambang is a Roman Catholic charity set up to help landmine victims and handicap children to gain ability of self-help and independence.

A cheerful young man spotted here in his 'limousine' going to school. Each of the wheel chairs and ‘hand-cycles’ used in the community is created by Father Kike and visiting volunteer engineers. Their good work nation-wide has prompted IDEAS to support and sustain their efforts into the rural Cambodia villages.

Angkor Hospital for Children (Friends Without A Border)

https://angkorhospital.org

Both the Kantha Bopha Children's Hospital and Angkor Hospital for Children provides free medical care for mothers-to-be and children. The hospital replies on services rendered by volunteer doctors and funds donated from all over the world.

Their help extended to the Cambodian people have now reached the smaller provinces and villagers far from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Parents and children waiting for their turn to be attended, sometimes for a few days, is a common sight in the hospitals daily.

IDEAS' hopes to make a difference - even if it is just for one single child. Hopefully the future of Cambodia sees a nation re-built and back to its past glory.

The newest briefing report from CAD

Submit to

2nd June 2011

***

We, at CAD would to inform both our friends (Mr. Mike and Mrs. Lucia) about the process of food provision has been implementing to 170 poor children who have been coming to access the CAD’s project activities in Prek Chdau Village, Peam Ek Commune, Ek Phonm District, Battambang Province as below;

1 - Activities before starting to give food to children:

CAD's staff and Director have upgraded Library where we plan to organize it in order us to give food to those poor children. We have laid a cement concrete under the library(ground floor) to be clean, cleaning and organizing everywhere around library, and we have enlarged a front part of library for another extra place for serving food, too.

2 - Food Provision to children

We just start to give food to children from today (02 June 2011). Yesterday was international children day (1st June) so we are very busy to celebrate this anniversary 62nd of international children day for our children in community in order them to have opportunity to join in many happy game as like football match, child sack running match, breaking balloon by mouth, breaking balloon by legs, slow bike riding match and they were provided books and pens and other things from CAD.

So we would like to show you the activity of food giving to children in the first day (today-Thursday). Before we let children eat rice, we invited all children to meditate and pray to dedicating to Mr. Seng Gnor, his wife, his child and other people who died in Pol Pot regime to come to get food from us, and we told all children in community about this fund source, it is from a couple Mr, Mike and Lucia in Scotland and Singapore.

We provide them food (rice and soup) and sweet (banana and rambutan). And we will change the food course for children because if we give same course of food every day, they will be boring with it. So we plan to change course of food for them. We want to tell you, today we have two courses of food, fish soup with white gourd and fish sour soup with morning glory, and the children like them very much, and finally we give them banana and rambutan as sweet after lunch.

And at the end of eating time, we checked children in list to make sure the number of children who came to eat lunch in CAD's program. The list of children is controlled by CAD project staff carefully.

Procession of children on International Children Day (June 1st, 2011)

3 - CAD agreed with Mr. Mike and Lucia to provide food to 170 children per day, and 5 days per week. So we would keep going on our agreement.

We hope that my friends will satisfy with these pictures

Date : 02 June 2011

Program Director of CAD

IDEAS has worked extensively in many parts of the world. Heart-rending situations abound in two parts of the world in particular in which we work - India and South East Asia. As we work extensively in Mumbai, India, we have been honoured to have supported two charitable institutions. We have also supported two extremely worthwhile causes in Cambodia.

CAMBODIA
Very few people can travel through Cambodia without having their heart ripped out by the madness of the genocidal years of the mid-late 1970's. It is impossible not to want to do something that can make a difference. Thus, IDEAS has supported two worthy institutions; one in Pnomh Penh, the other in Siem Riep. If you would also like to support these worthwhile causes, please contact the causes directly through their respective web links. You can read a PDF copy of the newsletter by clicking here or on the Newsletter banner. Thank You!

Angkor Hospital for Children – Center for Friends Without A Border

This is a marvellous institution, helping children who would not have access to medical care and attention otherwise – since Cambodia, despite marvellous efforts and progress in recent years, is still an impoverished country due to the terrible destruction imposed during the cruel nonsensical regime of the mid-late 1970’s.

Recent drives to expand beyond Siem Riep into other countryside regions are warmly welcomed, taking medical aid to children into the far reaches of Cambodia – children who simply cannot travel to Siem Riep for whatever reason.

FRIENDS the Restaurant

IDEAS admires hard work, drive and commitment, and this worthy institution exudes such attributes. Training and work programmes are run to help street children and youths – and their communities – to become useful contributory members of society through work. The value of work is two-fold :- in the first instance people are able to generate worthy revenue, and in the second instance people have a sense of worth and belonging.

INDIA

IDEAS has been working in Mumbai, one of the world’s most densely populated cities, since mid 2007. The poverty surrounding millions of the city’s people is overwhelming. At best, people have cardboard and a square of corrugated iron for a roof; at worst – nothing.

Whilst we try to do something at street-level, this is often not possible due to work commitments. Thus, we have supported two worthy institutions for some time now – The Indian Council for Mental Health and G.O.D.S. MBA Foundation.

G.O.D.S. MBA FOUNDATION

As stated above with respect to FRIENDS in Pnomh Penh, Cambodia, IDEAS admires hard work, drive and commitment. G.O.D.S. trains and encourages physically and mentally challenged people to train in order to work for a living. Apart from the self-satisfaction which arises from this, G.O.D.S. people reduce pre-conceived barriers in many cases – clearly demonstrating that they are more than capable of providing worthwhile service to the community at large – which further enhances their reward, self-satisfaction and personal development.

Indian Council for Mental Health

You could imagine that, if ‘ordinary’ / ‘normal’ children struggle in street-level Mumbai, then mentally challenged children have very little hope indeed. This worthy organisation helps such children through qualified teachers helping with learning, constructive play and self-help insofar as this is possible.
